Namma Metro Phase 3 Approved: Double-Decker Corridors Coming to Bengaluru

44.65 km · 222 km network by 2031

Bengaluru’s metro map is about to get a major upgrade. The Union government is set to approve Namma Metro Phase 3 — and for the first time, the city will get double-decker corridors that stack a metro line above a flyover.

What is Namma Metro Phase 3?

Phase 3 is a 44.65-km expansion that will take Bengaluru’s metro network to 222.2 km, cementing Namma Metro as one of India’s largest urban transit systems. The plan is built around two new corridors that target the city’s most congested western and outer stretches.

Corridor 1 spans 32.5 km, connecting JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura along the western leg of the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Corridor 2 runs 12.5 km between Hosahalli and Kadabagere along Magadi Road, opening up the fast-growing western suburbs.

Why double-decker corridors matter

The headline feature is the double-decker design, where the metro viaduct sits directly above a road flyover. This saves precious land in dense corridors, reduces the number of pillars on already-narrow roads, and delivers two layers of congestion relief from a single elevated structure.

For ORR commuters — many of them tech-park employees stuck in some of Bengaluru’s worst traffic — a metro line layered over a flyover could be a genuine game-changer for daily travel times.

Timeline and what comes next

Construction on Phase 3 is planned to begin in June 2026, with passenger operations expected to start around May 2031. Pre-construction activity — land acquisition, utility shifting and tree translocation — is already underway, though officials acknowledge it is moving slower than hoped.

With the Centre’s approval, funding clarity and detailed project execution can finally accelerate. For Bengaluru, Phase 3 is the difference between a metro that serves a few corridors and one that becomes the city’s default way to move.
